- View-based ER
ER is a signal, not a verdict. A Creator Report adds real ER on reels, real vs suspicious followers, audience and a fair price.
How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?
Engagement rate (ER) is the average number of likes and comments a post gets, divided by the number of followers, as a percentage:
ER = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100
Use the average of recent posts, ideally the last 12. For reels, a view-based rate divides interactions by views instead of followers, which shows how well the content holds the people who actually saw it.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Engagement rate falls as follower count grows, so judge it against the creator's tier, not one universal number.
| Tier | Followers | Healthy | Average | Below par | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano | under 10K | 5–8% | 3–5% | under 3% | Highest engagement. Tight-knit, loyal audiences. |
| Micro | 10K–50K | 3–5% | 2–3% | under 2% | The sweet spot for niche and D2C campaigns. |
| Mid-tier | 50K–500K | 1.5–3% | 1–1.5% | under 1% | Balanced reach and engagement for broader launches. |
| Macro | 500K–1M | 1–2% | 0.7–1% | under 0.7% | Scale. Check authenticity carefully. |
| Mega | over 1M | 0.5–1.5% | 0.3–0.5% | under 0.3% | Celebrity reach. Pay for awareness, not engagement. |
Why engagement rate isn't the whole story
A high ER can still hide bought engagement, an audience in the wrong country or comments from pods. Kriyah's Creator Reports add real engagement rate on reels and videos, real versus suspicious followers, organic versus boosted engagement, audience location and age, and brand safety.
Questions
How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?
Add the average likes and average comments per post, divide by the follower count and multiply by 100. For example, 4,000 likes and 150 comments on an account with 100,000 followers is a 4.15% engagement rate.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
It depends on size. As a guide, 5–8% is healthy for nano creators under 10K followers, 3–5% for micro creators (10K–50K), 1.5–3% for mid-tier (50K–500K), 1–2% for macro (500K–1M) and 0.5–1.5% for mega creators above 1M.
Does this calculator work for private accounts?
Yes, because you enter the numbers yourself. You only need the follower count and the average likes and comments from recent posts.
What is the difference between engagement rate and real engagement rate?
Engagement rate uses all posts. Kriyah's real engagement rate uses reels and videos only, leaving out static posts and carousels, which often perform differently.
Can a high engagement rate be fake?
Yes. Engagement pods and bought likes can inflate it. Check the likes-to-comments ratio and, for a full picture, real versus suspicious followers in a Creator Report.
